General Information

Accommodations for rent listed by this office have been accepted from University of Michigan faculty and staff who are going on leave, extended vacations, or sabbaticals. These listings are their primary residences. We also include listings from faculty and staff members who want to share their primary residence. In addition, we list houses and apartments of permanent or visiting faculty and staff not in the Ann Arbor area, for rent or exchange. Eligibility to list units is limited to permanent, retired, or visiting faculty and staff members only.

How to Use the Listings

Faculty and Staff Housing Referral ListingsAll permanent or visiting faculty or staff who would like to search or browse the listings and/or submit, update or cancel a listing need to complete the Eligibility Form. You will receive an email message from the Housing Information Office within 1-2 business days notifying you of your eligibility status. If your eligibility is confirmed, you will also receive a user name and password, which will allow you to log in and have access to all functions of the listing.

Policies and Procedures

  1. The Referral Service is designed primarily to assist newly appointed and visiting University of Michigan faculty and staff locate housing during their stay here, while at the same time assisting faculty and staff members from the Ann Arbor campus who wish to rent, share, or exchange their primary residence while on leaves of absence, sabbaticals, or extended vacations (two months or more). Dwellings used for income purposes (rental properties) are not eligible to be listed (they may be listed on our Off Campus Housing website)
  2. Current, retired, or visiting faculty and staff, and professors emeriti of the University of Michigan are eligible to advertise their primary permanent residence for rent, to share, for exchange, or to advertise a second home elsewhere in the world for rent.
  3. Current, retired, newly appointed, or visiting faculty or staff who would like to view or search the listings and/or submit a listing should complete the Eligibility Form. They will receive an email message from the Housing Information Office within 1-2 business days notifying them of their eligibility status. If eligibility is confirmed they will receive a username and password which will allow them to login and have access to all functions, including updating and canceling a listing.
  4. The Listing is available only to eligible University of Michigan affiliates, not to students or the Ann Arbor area population in general. When a listing is submitted it will be reviewed by this office and, if approved, included in the current listings.
  5. If you are renting a unit we suggest you contact your attorney or a real estate professional for advice in drawing up a lease, for information about the Fair Housing Act and its provisions that apply to you, and to explain your rights as a landlord, as well as your tenant's rights. The Housing Information Office is not responsible for and does not mediate in landlord/tenant conflicts that may arise from rentals originating from contacts made through the listing.


The Faculty and Staff Housing Referral Service cannot generally help students, realtors or agents, or anyone not affiliated with the University, or staff or faculty members who want to list a rental property that is not their primary residence. We encourage you to use the services of the Off-Campus Housing Program in the Housing Information Office, (734) 763-3205.
