Get Your Apartment Hooked Up to Utilities Quickly
Your lease should clearly indicate which utilities are paid for by the landlord and which are paid for by you, the tenant. If the lease is unclear on this issue, contact your landlord and ask that it be clarified and written in your lease so there is no further confusion. Once you know the utilities you are responsible for, contact the company that provides the service and open an account.
You should begin making your utility arrangements 2 weeks prior to your move-in date. If you wait until after move-in, you are likely to be without some important conveniences (e.g., hot showers) until you open the account. Another possibility if you don’t open the utility accounts by your move-in date is that they will remain in the landlord or prior tenant’s name, causing billing complications for you to work out with the other party.
